As the Texas Navy grew but with a majority of the ships in the fleet being sailing ships, the Navy realized the need to have the ability to move the ships around the port when there was not enough space for the ships to utilize their sails. The Navy purchased, something ahead of it’s time for that era, a steam powered paddle wheeler that could be utilized as a tug for sailing ships and to ferry goods as materials across the bay. It did not take long after it’s purchase where the T.N.S. Sugarland was showing it’s worth. Within weeks of being added to the fleet stationed in Galveston, a massive category 5 hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico had 15 ships trapped and set to be sunk if caught in the hurricane. With it’s new steam powered paddle wheels, the Sugarland traveled the 150 miles in two hours and pulled all 15 ships back to Galveston Bay in a matter of hours.
